We highly recommend Inuvik's most popular flying tour, the tour to Tuktoyaktuk, an Inuvialuit village located up on the Arctic Ocean. 1/2 Day Tuk tours depart daily Sunday through Friday from Inuvik and take you on an amazing 50 minute flight over the Mackenzie Delta and Pingos before landing in Tuk. At the airport you will be met by a traditional Inuvialuit guide who will take you on a 2-hour driving tour of the community. Dip your toe in the Beaufort Sea, explore the sod house and much more, and go down into the community's natural freezer which is buried deep in the permafrost. We will provide you with some special equipment for exploring the ice house which will make this part of your tour much more enjoyable. After all, this is a unique once-in-a-lifetime experience! The return flight takes you over the fascinating Arctic tundra above the tree line. Don't leave Inuvik before going all the way to the top of the North American continent!

The Herschel Island tour is really special. You will be flying for about 1.5 hours in a small float plane from Inuvik to and from this beautiful little island in the Beaufort Sea. This tour offers you a great opportunity to view a variety of wild life along the way, such as moose feeding in the Mackenzie Delta, caribou grazing near the coast, beluga whales swimming in the ocean, grizzly bears and even muskox, some of which have been living on the Island for several summers. Your float plane will land in Pauline Cove and you will be met by the park rangers who will give you a brief tour of the historical buildings reminiscent of the days when Herschel Island was a centre for hunting the bowhead whales. This is not only a place of historical value; it is a paradise for nature lovers. The bird life is incredible with many birds nesting close to the buildings in early summer - July. Plants and wildflowers grow lusciously in this special environment which is conducive to plant growth. You are given 2 hours to explore the island before returning to Inuvik. All in all the trip takes about 5 hours. Tour is available from mid July to mid September.

Tour Description:

Let us give you a trip of a lifetime with an interesting guide and experienced driver who is also a retired bush pilot that has flown in the Arctic for over 35 years. On this unique drive you will see the beauty and the wonder of the land in the far north from the air and from the ground.

The land along the Dempster is a pristine wilderness almost entirely unspoiled by mankind and presents itself fresh from the hand of the Creator. No wonder this drive is rated as one of North America's top ten drives! As Canada's most northern highway it is more like a very scenic back country road that stretches from the Yukon almost to the Arctic Ocean. The Dempster is 736 kilometers from the Klondike gold fields in the Yukon to Inuvik in the Northwest Territories. You will pass through three spectacular mountain ranges, cross the Arctic Circle, and travel on the ferries over two rivers in the vast Mackenzie Delta with a brief stop in Fort McPherson before reaching Inuvik. There you will continue your journey in a small plane to the remote Inuvialuit village of Tuktoyaktuk situated up on the Beaufort Sea. This trip includes a tour of the village with an exceptional local guide who will give you the cultural experience you are looking for. You will get a guided tour of the fascinating underground community ice house buried deep in the permafrost. Let us give you that unique rich northern experience you have been dreaming about!

This tour is based on two people traveling together. Your tour begins and ends in Dawson City and is available from June 14 to September 11, Monday through Friday. Just to recap, this package includes the following: the road trip up the Dempster Highway with an experienced guide and driver, a town of Inuvik tour, the flight to Tuk and ground tour of the village, all accommodations and the flight back to Dawson City from Inuvik.

While traveling in the north you will be on "northern time." In other words we hope that you will be flexible! All tours are subject to weather conditions and if necessary we will substitute a given tour for another activity. Be prepared for changes in scheduling.
